Cocoa butter's most famous skincare claim doesn't hold up, and we'd rather tell you that than repeat it. It's still in the botanical butter lattice for real reasons — just not the reason most people assume.
The Claim That Isn't True
Cocoa butter is widely marketed for preventing stretch marks during pregnancy. A peer-reviewed review of topical treatments for striae distensae found that multiple studies on cocoa butter, including a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 175 pregnant women, showed no significant difference between cocoa butter and placebo in preventing or reducing stretch marks. This isn't a fringe finding — it's the consistent result across the available clinical literature. We're not going to put a claim on a jar that the research doesn't support, even a claim as popular and expected as this one.
What Cocoa Butter Actually Does
Cocoa butter's real value is structural. It's roughly one-third stearic acid, one-third oleic acid, and one-quarter palmitic acid — a heavily saturated fatty acid profile that makes it one of the more occlusive plant butters available, meaningfully reducing transepidermal water loss by forming a dense lipid layer. Alongside the fatty acids, it carries polyphenols and vitamin E that contribute real antioxidant activity, distinct from (and unrelated to) the debunked stretch-mark claim.
Where We Source It
We source cocoa butter through vetted, ethical suppliers rather than growing it ourselves — cacao isn't part of what we cultivate directly the way our tropical fruit is. Same standard as every ingredient in this lattice that doesn't come from our own farms: sourced properly, not sourced from wherever's cheapest.
