Skincare is quietly walking back from the acid arms race. For years the standard advice was stronger, more often, more aggressive — higher percentages of glycolic and salicylic acid, nightly retinol, exfoliate until your skin feels raw because raw meant it was working. That era is losing steam. The trend now is gentler renewal: enzyme-based exfoliation that removes what's ready to go without stripping what isn't.
We never had to walk that back. Enzymatic exfoliation has been Stage 2 of Fruity Puppy Original since the first batch.
Acids vs. Enzymes: Two Different Philosophies
Chemical acid exfoliants work indiscriminately. Glycolic and salicylic acids dissolve the bonds holding skin cells together whether those cells are ready to shed or not, which is why over-exfoliation is such a common problem — the acid doesn't know the difference between dead surface cells and skin that still needs to be there.
Enzymes work differently. Papain, the enzyme we draw from papaya, and the enzymatic compounds in lilikoi and spearmint, catalyze the hydrolysis of keratin protein bonds in dead, ready-to-shed skin cells specifically. That selective action is closer to how your skin naturally sheds than an acid bath is. The result is smoother texture and brighter tone without the tightness, redness, or barrier damage that comes from acids that don't know when to stop.
Why This Was Built Into Fruity Puppy From Day One
Our four-stage mechanism was never designed around a single active ingredient doing all the work. Stage one cools and soothes on contact. Stage two is the enzymatic treatment — papain, lilikoi, and spearmint working on dead surface cells. Stage three carries actives deeper through the botanical butter lattice. Stage four leaves a lasting layer of antioxidants as a fruit shield on the skin's surface.
Enzymatic exfoliation sits in the middle of that sequence on purpose. It's not the whole product, and it's not meant to be aggressive enough to need a whole product built around recovering from it. It's one part of a formula designed to work with skin instead of against it.
What "Gentle" Actually Means
Gentle doesn't mean weak. Enzymatic exfoliation targets a specific protein structure with precision instead of dissolving bonds broadly, which is why it can be effective without needing the aggressive percentages that acids require to work. You get smoother, more even texture without the multi-day "purge" period or the sensitivity that comes from stripping your skin's barrier along with the dead cells.
This is also why we never added a separate physical scrub or microbead exfoliant to the line. Enzymes handle that job at the cellular level, without the manual abrasion that can create micro-tears in sensitive or reactive skin.
Skin Eats. Feed It Well.
We keep coming back to this phrase because it's the actual mechanism, not just a slogan. Papain is an enzyme your skin recognizes and can use, the same way it recognizes and uses the antioxidants and fatty acids in the rest of the formula. That's the difference between exfoliation that works with your skin's own biology and exfoliation that just wears it down until something happens.
