It's also genuinely under-researched compared to papaya or hibiscus, and an honest ingredient story includes saying so.
What the Research Actually Covers
A peer-reviewed study in the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society identified six polyphenolic compounds in Inga edulis leaf extract — gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin, and several flavonoid glycosides — and measured very high antioxidant capacity in lab assays. Separate research has found similar phenolic and anthocyanin content in the seeds. Worth being precise here: most of the published research is on the leaves and seeds specifically, not the sweet white pulp people actually eat, which means what's confirmed about the plant's antioxidant chemistry doesn't automatically transfer one-to-one to every part of it.
Where It Grows
Our ice cream bean comes from Rooster Island Farms here on the Big Island — grown in the same mineral-dense volcanic basalt soil, rich in magnesium, potassium, iron, and silica, that shapes every other plant in this formula. Inga edulis is also a nitrogen-fixing tree, meaning it actively improves the soil it grows in rather than depleting it — a detail that matters for how Rooster Island farms sustainably, even if it's not a skincare claim on its own.
Why It's In the Formula Anyway
We include ice cream bean because the plant genuinely does carry documented phenolic and antioxidant compounds, not because we've dressed up a novelty ingredient with borrowed research from a different part of the plant. It contributes to the broader antioxidant complex the same way the better-studied fruits do — one more source in a multi-compound approach, not a single ingredient asked to carry a claim the current research doesn't fully support yet.
